I used to think I knew some of the answers to life’s questions, but social media has cured me of that delusion.

I used to think that I had a few answers to life’s questions, but not anymore.  Social media has cured me of that delusion.  At long last I can shed the shackles of ignorance and naivete.

With this thought in mind, I state herein and confess, (and I have stated in previous narratives), my ignorance and my inherent inability to understand the human condition beyond my personal perceptions.

To start, here is a quote by Joseph Conrad, a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language;  “My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel – it is, before all, to make you see.  That – and no more, and it is everything. If I succeed, you shall find there according to your desserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charm – all you demand; and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask.

I think this quote provides some insight behind the motivation for this effort to write my thoughts about my social media perceptions.

I find it excruciatingly difficult to write this treatise because I do, in fact, sincerely care about what others think.  And, I do honestly feel insulted and become incredulous when reading ignorant posts by others.  However, none of that matters because, as I stated in the opening sentence, I am resigned to the fact that perhaps I have been delusional and naïve in thinking that all people in my life are capable of being compassionate, kind, generous, understanding, forgiving, enlightened, joyous, loving, and are somehow virtuous in word and deed. But if the posts I have read since I have joined social media are an indication of reality, my hopes and wishes of an enlightened consciousness of all humanity are simply fanciful dreams. At long last, I have been cured of my simple utopian hopes.

Before you entertain thoughts of incredulity and defensiveness, please understand that my purpose for having a “presence” on social media is because I think that I have a genuine interest in the lives of the people who have shared some moment in time and place with me.

As I follow various threads of thoughts/comments regarding various subjects, I marvel that there is this unique personal understanding and perception that each of us has developed despite the commonality we all share in being a part of this human existence.  Because of our individual acuity, I find it fascinating that some of us tend to try to explain our complex view of reality by posting on timelines some catchy phrase or meme.  And even more astonishing to me is that at one point I had this hope that perhaps the idea of providing heartfelt commentary backed by truthful factual data would somehow explain some of the complex and emotionally wrenching problems of the human condition.  Again, I confess that I had this delusional idea that verifiable facts would somehow counter the short catchy phrases of incomplete data that provides a miniscule fraction of facts related to the complexity of life as we know it.  I am resigned to the simple fact that I will never understand why posting ignorant, ill-conceived, prejudiced remarks that are proven misconceptions can somehow contribute to a dialogue for solving political and life issues.

It seems to me that there is this clambering competition for space on a timeline to make a point or to prove a theory.  Unfortunately this rush to proclaim a thought or to defend a position sometimes amounts to simple insults and the dismissal of another person’s legitimate concern or factual analysis.  Rather than a debate of facts, reasoning, an exchange of personal insights, an attempt at respectful empathy, or an acknowledgement of respectful differences, exchanges on timelines instead become a series of insults that incites anger, vitriol, insults and ill spoken falsehoods.

Many of the memes and catchy phrases posted on timelines are easily proved to be misleading and even verifiably false, yet I continually see them posted.  Perhaps there is this ill begotten hope that somehow it is an answer or even a clue to the ultimate solution of the societal, political, cultural, religious, or personal life problems we face as human beings.  I even imagine, (for I have tried it), that some of these popular phrases are posted with the thought that somehow it will convince others to see the light and have that eureka moment of discovery.  Even now as I write this, I am guilty of the delusion that this combination of words will alter a point of view and thereby others with dissimilar viewpoints will amend their thinking and abandon their personal prejudices and ignorance and comprehend my version of the story.

Because of the harshness of some posts, some people on the social media have abandoned their space on the forum because of the divisiveness it presents.  And I am truly sorry that people felt the need to leave because I truly think that it has value in that it keeps us connected.

Community has great value for me.  I hereby will attempt to refrain from posting any such meme or phrase of limited factual data. I am no longer interested in trying to convince you to change and instead I hope to seek ways to enhance the community to which I belong and embrace our common condition rather than augment our differences.  .

Despite all the failings of the human condition, I refuse to abandon social medium.  I am much more interested in staying connected to the many people who I adore and love.  I like to think that I truly have an interest in the wellbeing of the people in my friend list and I will not be deterred from remaining connected to each individual despite some of the angst that stirs within my mind, heart and soul when words are posted that I do not understand, I do not agree with, or that I inherently know are untrue and hurtful.

I am not compelled to unfriend anyone. I am more interested in knowing how you are doing in your life.  I am interested in your personal successes, your moments of joy, and your moments of sadness.  For the great privilege of having you as a friend, I am willing to read some of the posts unrelated to your personal endeavors.  And I may even read your posts related to politics and religion, but I hope you will respect my feelings if I do not agree with what is posted.  I also hope that you will understand that I may feel the sting of your disregard for kindness, empathy, and consideration of another person’s legitimate point of view.  In addition, I most likely will not cut and paste, pass along or share some of the “chain letter” type posts.

Despite my perceived trespasses and lack of decorum, I remain forever hopeful that the connection of sharing a point in time, a common experience, family DNA, or the same heartfelt desire to be a better person will keep us connected.  The core of this narrative is that I think we have more in common as people than differences that would drive us apart.

I invite you to disregard this narrative, to unfriend me, to hurl your insults my way; I am sure they will hurt and I will be greatly disappointed in my inability to understand why such things have come to pass.  I know that my skin is too thin, my reasoning flawed, and my desire to avoid conflict too strong to confront many of the hurtful slurs hurled on these timelines.

This is not a farewell narrative, but instead it is a declaration of embracing our humanity in the hope that each of us will share an enlightened moment either here or somewhere in the universe of connectedness.  I hereby proclaim that I am cured of the delusional utopian ideal that thoughtful and meaningful dialogue about conflicting ideas can be engaged on social media.

The United Kleptocrats of America

This narrative is not intended incite, but rather to provide insight, consideration and acknowledgement that perhaps systems of government are always in need of maintenance and repair.  I have had this on my mind and feel compelled to share my point of view about the state of affairs called politics.  It seems evident to me that we no longer have politicians that are somehow affiliated with a political party, be it Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, Green, Independent, etc.  Instead our governments have spawned kleptocrats.

Until there is a true spirit of public service for the benefit of all citizens, we shall always be plagued with interregnum and the ossified stubbornness of people who are imbued with limited personal, and ignorant rationalizations.  We need representatives who reject the brokering of power, the inflicting of oppressive edicts, and who are not victims of subjugation by corporate terror.  We need an infusion of compassion, decorum, and policies based on common sense, common good and scientific evidence.

Our government discourse will continue to be mired in the juvenile antics of loathsome, insecure, (mostly white male), oligarchs, until we have government officials who can see beyond their wallets, beyond a “zero sum” attitude, and beyond their fragile egos. We must instill the concept that great service is achieved by giving one’s time unconditionally.

Greatness and respect cannot be bought, nor can it be foisted upon a knowledgeable citizen who understands and lives the struggles within the stratum of the working class citizens.

Be wary of a nattily dressed person of spurious origin who claims without evidence, of having lived the life of a common citizen, and that he/she understands your plight.  The masses of common citizens must establish solidarity and dismiss the kleptocrats and insist on service oriented individuals who strive to address the needs of our all-encompassing environment.  We must demand that the basic requirement of a representative is to respect others and our natural resources so that we can establish a legacy that our children can cherish and appreciate.  The exploitation of our citizens and our natural resources must stop immediately.

I personally have been told to “grow up”, stop being a clown, and to take situations seriously, which is a substantial challenge for my ADHD influenced mind.  So from a position of empathy and understanding as a dysfunctional member of this dystopian society, I invite all those that have the serendipitous occasion of reading this narrative to practice one of my favorite biblical golden rules; “do onto others as you would have them do to you.”  And don’t forget to vote with compassion and knowledge and to look beyond your wallet and personal perceptions.

I end with a quote by Albert Schweitzer;   “You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others-something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.”

Christmas Eve Reflection – Enjoying Simple Things

12/24/2017:

I start most of my days by reading a quote from a book; today’s quote has fashioned this idea to write a simple reflection about this holiday we call Christmas.

Today’s Quote is by L.M. Montgomery; “I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens – but just those that bring simple little pleasures.”

Tomorrow is Christmas day which marks a very significant holiday in which our culture adorns our environment with extravagant trimmings, prepares prodigious feasts, and exchanges many luxurious gifts.

The ability to participate in this pageant is a blessing beyond the dreams of many who inhabit this planet.  For this I am grateful.  But for me I always wondered about what truly is at the heart of such a joyous season or even a joyous moment in my simple life.

I think this quote by L.M. Montgomery is close to the mark of what is important for me this time of the year.  What stirs my heart and soul are the simple things within this tradition: the smiles, the hugs, the conversations, the laughter, the feeling of home, the simple shared love among families, friends, and neighbors and the acknowledgement that we are all connected by this wondrous existence.

On this Christmas day, my greetings and wishes for you are not those of great materialist or monetary gain, fancy trimmings, or momentous revelations.  I hope an abundance of the simple things enters your home and surrounds you and brings unpretentious joy and peace into your life.

Judging of one’s content

Most citizens of the United States of America know about Martin Luther King Jr. and the speech he gave on August 28, 1963 titled “I HAVE A DREAM…”

Within that speech he spoke about how he hoped that his children would be judged “…by the content of their character.”  This particular statement has always remained prevalent in my personal consciousness and has guided me as I have interacted with people throughout my entire life.  I have always endeavored to find and understand the content of a person’s character.

It recently occurred to me that many politicians are unable to employ the compelling doctrine that Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed.  In understanding his speech and the readings of many spiritual leaders, I too have dreamed of a world with tolerance, brother/sisterhood, equality, sensitivity, consensus, justice, compromise, etc.  I have long held the hope that there would be a genuine working model to accomplish the tasks of community goodwill and a working government for the good of all the people.

Now more than ever it is sadly evident to me that politicians and many of our citizens judge and act according the “CONTENT of their and others’ WALLETS”.

Changing Perspective of Time

One recent morning while doing my usual routine of reading inspirational quotes, personal enlightenment materials, and the general news of the day, it occurred to me that my life has become an endless and redundant routine.  Now that I am in my sixties I rarely feel the need to be in a hurry or anxious to get things accomplished within a certain time frame.  However, the significant revelation of that day is that on my next birthday I will be eligible for Medicare.

That means that I am now half way through the decade of my sixties!  Is there any significance to that?  When in my fifties I thought that my sixties were going to be a very productive decade, but it seems that instead I am becoming more imbedded in a routine of complacency and the acceptance of the mundane.

As I reflect on these facts the essential theme is “time.”  It is ticking nonstop; it is passing along and I feel like a rock in the stream.  Time rushes over and past me smoothing my edges, wearing me down, changing my psyche and my physical appearance.

Sometimes it will push me hard and I may roll and tumble along in its current only to find another resting spot in which to settle while the current of time continues pass over, around, and through me in its continual assault.

In general, I simply love this life.  There have been moments that I wanted to cling to and cease the march of time so that they can endure forever, but that is no longer a fantasy I can afford to embrace.  Time has marched, still marches and will always march and I cannot do anything about it.

As I continue to exist, I know that time will continue to wear upon me until my clock expires.  The best I can hope for is that as I am shaped and smoothed like a precious metal or gem both literally and metaphorically.  I earnestly hope that I will always embrace the changes in my life and continue to learn and grow with each passing moment.

No longer do I get lost in the notion of immortality and I know now more than ever my tenure is mostly in the sunset phase.  I don’t always love certain aspects of what constitutes this existence.  There are many things that perplex and sadden me and my heart weeps from the shear atrocities humans can inflict on each other and upon the environment.  Yet there are also those experiences of wonder and miracles that keep my hope afloat and my psyche from falling into complete despondency and despair.  I will always cling to the hope that I will continue to find rays of sunshine and to provide rays of sunshine for others to enjoy.

Choosing Your Battles OR Get Over It and Get With It

 

Today’s writing in a reflection of a quote by Jonathan Kozol an American writer, educator, and activist, best known for his books on public education in the United States.  “Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win.”

Upon consideration of the recent posts that I have written about Trump it is certainly evident that I am not happy that he is president.  But as Trump supporters have stated, “GET OVER IT”, therefore I shall.  I have gotten over it and now I plan to “GET WITH IT” and resist the trampling of my rights.

As always, I will respect the office of the president and the notion that we still have a great nation founded on democratic ideals.  However, Trump’s insults and derogatory tweets are offensive and his behavior unworthy of my respect.  I don’t know Trump as a person so I will not state that I dislike him as a person, but at this time I have difficulty embracing his character.

Upon reading Kozol’s quote it occurred to me that I have neither the resources nor the desire to take on Trump and his politics on the grand stage of American national politics.  What I can do is remain true to my principles and core values and remain vigilant within my sphere of influence to make the world that I know a better place.

Every day I can show kindness to my family, friends, neighbors, and even my perceived enemies.  Every day I can lend a helping hand to others who need it.  Every day I can do something positive as it relates to my environment.

I can volunteer in our public schools, and make a difference in a child’s life.  I can provide food and clothing to the homeless.  I can contribute to the shelters for the disadvantaged.  I can attend neighborhood council meetings and work on local issues.  I can become involved with the school board.  I can make contributions to the causes and charities that match my sensibilities.  I can simply mow my grass, plant a garden and beautify the space that I touch.

I doubt that you will ever see me on the national stage of politics because that is not my ambition.  Instead I dream about being part of the grass roots that contributes to the small ripples of change that comes from the base of our humanity.  I dream of a deep rooted change that entails the fundamental respect, rights, and freedoms of all persons within our society.  Yes this even includes the Donald Trumps of the world.

I shall always remain hopeful that we the people, despite our humanness, can fulfill the dream of our forefather that hoped to establish a more perfect union as stated in the Preamble of the Constitution.

I envision a day when the famous document “Declaration of Independence” is fulfilled.  “…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,…“.  And finally I recall the words of our pledge of allegiance which included the words “…liberty and justice for all.”

The Trump Logic of Fake

On this inauguration day for the president of the United States of America, there have been questions about the legitimacy of the person known as Donald J. Trump who took the oath of office today.  Thinking in the manner of “Tic-Tac Trump”, I began to develop deductions regarding the validity of the election results.

Here is the line of logic that I have drawn from the words of “Tittle-tattling Trump.” During the campaign he claimed that the election was rigged.  What he failed to tell us is that the election was rigged in his favor.  He tweeted recently that contents in an intelligence briefing he received was false and fictitious, and he has called main stream media fake news.

Keeping in mind that this is an attempt to reflect “Delusional Donald’s” logic, and considering the words related to the various tweets and statements he has made, and bearing in mind that he has fake hair, a fake tan, fake billions, (why else would he not show his tax returns), it can be unequivocally concluded that we now have a FAKE president.

Citizenry Vigilance Interrelated to Donald Trump

There are many people on social media expressing their displeasure regarding Donald Trump being elected president.  Many have stated that they will boycott the inauguration and not listen or watch it.  I don’t agree with this type of action.

Anyone that knows me or if you don’t know me and are reading this narrative out of curiosity, Trump is the absolute antithesis of my person-hood.  I would be hard pressed to find common ground with Donald.  While he has had a life of opulence and privilege, I have experienced great joy with my work of service to, and in league with, the common person while earning a modest wage.  I am also intimately connected to the community that surrounds me via volunteer work and neighborly activities.

I could devote many words highlighting our differences, but that is not the purpose of this narrative.  This is about our need to remain vigilant as citizens of this already great country the United States of America.

As I began to formulate these words two quotes came to mind.  The one most known to many in this country is the quote from the Godfather movie; “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

Another similar quote is attributed to Sun-tzu, a Chinese general and military strategist;  “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

With this in mind I intend to observe Mr. Trump’s every deed and action, and listen to his every word.  I plan to challenge each action and word with loving-kindness, while employing all the prudence, patience, understanding, hope, and enlightenment that I can sustain.

I suggest we all gather around him and embrace him in the fiercest hug we can metaphorically muster, and hold on to him so tight that he pops like a zit from our “extreme vetting” and our embracing love.  Let us not forget that Mr. Trump is a flawed character in need of our parental guidance.  He is a needy person and requires our attention, and it is our civic duty to pay attention to him like a parent pays attention to the bully on the playground.  We cannot and must not let the common citizens of this great nation suffer at the hands of the elitist, privileged, moneyed politicians.

Once Mr. Trump has resigned himself to the understanding that his self-absorption and vanity are a bore to the 73, 648, 823* voters who either voted for Clinton or others, we can send him back to his tower the way the Ents sent Saruman back to his tower broken and defeated .

Sour Grapes of a Radical Feminist? OR Could it be Humped by Trump?

WARNING: Conservative thinking Trump voters please proceed with CAUTION: For those of you that are in support of the current president elect, I suggest you STOP reading here and go on to some other enlightening reading.  The following is my subjective opinion.

I realize that millions of people will disagree with this narrative and millions others may find it to be an acceptable synopsis of the recent election cycle and the type of campaigns that were employed.

Here are some basic facts.  Trump lost the popular vote.  As of 11/27/2016, Hillary Clinton (64,654,445/48.2%) has received more than 2 million votes than Donald Trump (62,418,792/46.5%).  This is according to an analysis from the independent Cook Political Report.

However, Trump will become president because of this entity we call the electoral college.

With the declaration that Trump is considered the president elect I reflected on this event and have developed the following narrative in attempt to capture what it means to me as a citizen of the United States of America.

The first thought that comes to mind is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, which I recite to myself every morning.  Trumps words and actions were the antithesis of this prayer …

  • Hatred trumps love;
  • Injury trumps pardon;
  • Doubt trumps faith;
  • Despair trumps hope;
  • Darkness trumps light;
  • Sadness trumps joy.

MY VERSION CONTINUED…

  • Oppression trumps solace.
  • Ignorance trumps understanding.
  • Exploitation trumps giving.
  • Self-gluttony trumps compassionate giving.
  • Bombastic trumps sincere.
  • Sycophant trumps service to others.
  • Profit trumps loving-kindness.
  • Conspiracies trumps rational thinking.
  • Disingenuous promises trumps proven accomplishments.
  • Financial recklessness trumps fiscal responsibility.
  • Religious dogma trumps the bill of rights.
  • Narcissism trumps humility.
  • Surfeit of the few trumps well-being of the citizens.
  • Prejudiced white men in suits trump the defenseless disenfranchised vulnerable masses.
  • Depravity of character trumps moral character.
  • Humiliation and ridicule trumps reasoned debate.
  • Discord trumps peace.

I can only imagine what the White House will become.  It will likely to become a “counting house” for the affluent rather than a place to fulfill the preamble of our constitution which is to “…establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity…..”

Trump was right about one thing.  In my opinion the election was rigged!

In conclusion, I cling to only one hope and that is I hope I am wrong about my perceptions of this person that was elected president on November 08, 2016 and that 46.5% of the people that voted for him saw and understood something that I did not see!
