I often wonder about the song “Over the Rainbow”. I catch myself singing and humming this tune from time to time along with a collection of other songs that are ingrained in my sub-conscious.
For some time now (several years) I have been pondering the question of “What if I am already over the rainbow and I don’t know it?” And what exactly is this rainbow concept? Do I really want my troubles to melt like lemon drops above the chimney tops; do my skies always need to be blue; do my dreams really need to come true if I dare to dream at all? And if I go there will you actually find me there because it seems like a difficult place to find and travel to. I may get a little lonely there.
So I struggle with this concept of over the rainbow. It is a physical phenomenon that requires one to travel a great distance via tornado or perhaps by the DeLorean DMC-12 with flux capacitor time machine? Or is it stored somewhere within and one gets there by overcoming self-imposed limitations. After all, there is evidence that dreams do come true for people that dare to dream them. Further proof could be found in the stunning sunrises, dazing sunsets, the harmony of music, love, the innate beauty of nature. But when I think about the strife, suffering, paradoxes, hypocrisies, oppression, inequalities, and so forth, the rainbow concept fails me.
Some religions promote the concept of an afterlife: could this be the rainbow concept? Perhaps this rainbow concept is captured in fleeting moments of life where the planets and stars align in your consciousness and for that brief time your troubles cease.
I used to think that the “Wizard of Oz” story had some profound meaning but not so much any more. Then again, perhaps it does, especially when I consider my own struggles with lacking the brains, the heart, or the courage required to make a positive difference in this world.
There is probably some Facebook app that you can execute that will identify your true “Wizard of Oz” character! What character are you? Should we start a Facebook posting chain of copy this narrative and post the “Wizard of Oz” character that matches your identity. I am Toto, who are you?
I hope you have a great experience today and every day.
Here are the lyrics to the song “Over the Rainbow” and a YouTube url to the song.

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh, why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow why, oh, why can’t I?
