Find what you are looking for at the check out counter….

Finding what you are looking for…

It seems that every time I go into a retail store and I am checking out to purchase the items I selected, the cashier asks me, “Did you find everything that you were looking for?”

This simple question always brings to the surface the burgeoning question regarding my existence that has plagued me for many years. I want to answer in some way unrelated to retail purchases and more about life’s paradoxes.

I constantly seem to answer this simple question in some manner unrelated to the unsuspecting employee’s actual intent.  I believe when the cashier asks the question, they actually do not expect an answer of any sort!  Here are some of the answers that course through my ever evolving mind…

  • What aisle can I find Existential Enlightenment?
  • I lost my mind and I thought maybe I could purchase another here.
  • Do you sell Bodhichitta here?
  • I came in here in search of myself hoping to peel away the layers of my crusted old self in order to find and reveal my inner being. But instead I seem to have filled my cart with groceries.  Thank you for asking though.
  • I was hoping to buy some saneness? Do you sell that here?
  • What aisle are the toothpicks? I never seem to find the toothpicks!  They are so small and illusive.  It is like they move and hide every time I come in here.

Thanks again for reading my post.  Have a wonderful experience today!

What is there to say about me? I am not sure if I am typical or not, average or not, smart or not, BUT I think I definitely have a sense of humor. I am an aging baby boomer wondering if I have something to say about the world as I see it.
