Another change of address, another opportunity to reassess… during my recent move, I came across socks that needed mending since a time way back when I lived in Maryland. In that moment of clarity I pondered; why do I keep these socks?
A further assessment of my personal wares revealed that I have been holding onto the following:
- jacket with a broken zipper
- dress pants that I grew out of when I stopped running marathons 10 years ago
- lamp that needs to be rewired
- violin that needs repair
- old car parts
- broken bicycle wheel
- busted chair
- leaky air mattress
- thankless jobs
- difficult relationships
- You fill in the rest….
The simple answer to all the items on this list is HOPE.
- I hope to mend the socks and wear them again because I like the color and the comfortable fit
- I hope and dream of running marathons again and losing those extra inches of girth around my belt line
- I hope to refurbish the lamp because it has been in my family for generations and will bring me a sense of connection and joy when it is completed.
- I hope to play the violin again; it is meant to be played and even though music is a difficult challenge for my hearing impairment I dream and hope to try it again.
- I hope that the old car parts can be useful in a pinch
- The busted chair represents the hope of my parents when they first started their lives together in Avenel; it belongs with the kitchen table that they owned when they first moved into their home over sixty years ago
- The leaky air mattress represented the hope for a peaceful night of sleep, and it was fun to watch Eli sink into it as the night wore on…
- The thankless job was clung to with the hopeful thought that something better lies ahead.
- Difficult relationships are not always difficult and there is always hope to find the common ground and the chance for a better connection
- Your list of hopeful causes – If you have read to this point I hope for you to experience all the best in this existence we call life.
I believe there is an inherent sense of HOPE in every living being. A hope to survive, a hope to thrive, a hope to achieve, a hope to belong, a hope to create, and a hope to be loved unconditionally for the person that you are.
That is why I hold onto my holey, holy socks….
